The hug shirt from Cute Circuit sends hugs to people over distance. Amazingly, it has been nominated as one of the best inventions of 2006 by time magazine.
How does it work? The system is very simple: a Hug Shirt (Bluetooth with sensors and actuators), a Bluetooth java enabled mobile phone with the Hug Me java software running (it understands what the sensors are communicating), and on the other side another phone and another shirt. If you do not have a Hug Shirt but know that your friend has one you can still send them a hug creating it with the HugMe software and it will be delivered to your friend’s Hug Shirt!
CuteCircuit says that it is not to replace real human hugs, but rather it is meant to give joy and warmth to friends and loved ones who are far away. They say that they combined emotion with technology to bring human-human interaction which is very important.
This technology is really nice. It can cheer up and give comfort to anyone who is lonely. Plus, the shirt can be washed by removing the sensors. It is also very soft, lead-free, and non-toxic!

Hugs, as we all know and as dictionary.com describes it, is an affectionate embrace. Simple as it can be, I do not doubt its power of universal communication. All sorts of people from all over the globe need it. It is an action of love, acceptance, and comfort.Hugs can be sent and received through the use of technology. No, I am not talking of YM emoticons. The passing of such an affection is done with a pair of shirt, their sensors, and something like remote controls. Two people, who I think were couples, were featured in one of my favorite weekend National Geographic shows. They made an experiment how people hug and discovered that each hug in a very similar way. The couple planned to make shirts able to communicate hugs by placing sensors on the shirt where people put their hands on and apply pressure. One way for this hug device to work, the receiver and sender must wear shirts with sensors. The sender will hug himself and the shirt will record the amount of pressure. Using something that looks like a remote and a phone, he will send it, giving the receiver an option to take it. If the hug is accepted, the shirt of the receiver will generate an equal amount of pressure that was sent.I don't think this device is already available commercially. Its success in the market in the future is still uncertain, but what's sure is that people who receive and give hugs, release more hormones and live long and happily.
Hug, while they're free and while distance is not yet a barrier.

the hug shirt - a brilliant piece of invention that makes people send hugs over distance. there are sensors embedded in the shirt that feel the strength of the touch, the skin warmth and the heartbeat rate of the sender and actuators that recreate the sensation of touch, warmth and emotinon of the hug to the shirt of the distant loved one. the hug shirt is bluetooth and works with mobile phones. it is not meant to replace human contact, but to make you happy if you are away and you miss your friends and loved ones. combining emotion and technology should be part of every design process. people need physical contact with each other. technology should allow for a pleasant human-human interaction.

Roshni told me about a technology that enables blind men to see using a video cam which will send messages to the brain, allowing them to see even if its black and white. I made further research an article.
Blind men can see phosphenes, which are small points of light, with the use of electrical stimulation of their visual cortex. When an electrical current passes through the brain, the lights don't appear in one spot, rather they spread. Dobelle studes this effect and says that they are building a patient's map layer by layer. The first layer contains individual phosphenes and the next of multiples. They are aiming to know how the patient's phosphenes are related to each other so that the video feed can be translated in a way that will makes sense in his mind.
It's great to know that it's possible for the blind to see even though if it's not the exact and perfect vision. They will not miss much of the world after all.

There are technologies being developed to help the blind see. One way is through the brain implant. A brain implant or cortical implant provides visual input from a camera directly to the brain via electrodes in contact with the visual cortex at the backside of the head. A computer is used to process the sensory streams, as is typical for a brain-computer interface (BCI). One of the pioneers of this is William Dobelle, and they call it the Dobelle implant. He died in October 2004, but Stony Brook University and Avery Biomedical Devices Inc. will reportedly continue development of the Dobelle brain implant. He had two volunteers Jens, and Jerry. Jens implant allowed him to see rough images but the implants started to fail so they had to remove it.
Image resolution from the brain implant:
Reportedly had 68 electrodes, technically offering up to 68 pixels, but resulting in only some 20 effective pixels (phosphenes) at irregular positions and in a narrow field of view, like in tunnel vision. For comparison: an ordered 8 by 8 pixel matrix would have 64 pixels. Resolution of the implants reported in 2002 for Jens and others was 144 pixels (72 pixels for each of the two brain hemispheres). In 2003 the reported resolution was 484 electrodes, 242 electrodes for each hemisphere, at best equivalent to a 15 by 16 pixel matrix.
Cost indication: $125,000 (excluding training and adaptation).
I hope that this technology and others will be fully developed in the future to help the blind see. It takes time and it costs a lot, but at least this technology will help them recover even just some part of there sight.

for the past years, lots of progress was being made for sensory substitution devices for the blind. a brain implant or cortical implant provides visual input from a camera directly to the brain. a computer is used to precess the sensory streams. the human mind is so brilliant. through modern technology, almost all people with physical defects could now be able to do things like everybody else.

I don't know anything about the video game StarCraft, but my groupmates said it was really good and that a sequel, StarCraft II, will be released after 2007. I decided to just quote this from wikipedia to show some information about the unrealeased video game. Remeber that it is still unreleased, so the info on this might change.
" StarCraft II is being developed for concurrent release on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X. The game will be released after 2007, but a multiplayer demo will be playable at Blizzcon 2007."
"The storyline of StarCraft II will take place several years after StarCraft: Brood War and will feature the return of a number of heroes and villains from the original game, such as Zeratul, Sarah Kerrigan, and Jim Raynor. Players will revisit worlds from the original game, such as Char and Braxis, along with new worlds, such as the jungle planet Bel'Shir. Groups from the first game, like the Xel'Naga and the Terran Dominion, will also be featured in the sequel."

This is the game everyone is waiting for. Starcraft is one of the best RTS games during its time, and its still one of the most played games. When i heard that starcraft 2 was coming i was psyched, i was eager to know what are the updates, and i did a little of web browsing and came up with the official site, http://www.starcraft2.com/ . It pushed the game to another level. The units were pumped up and the graphics were just unreal. I can't wait for its release. You should also see the trailer in the official website. The character was right... its about time.

I consider Starcraft as one of the most enduring games ever made. Influenced by my brothers and cousins, I played it when I was about seven years old. I started playing terran in a campaign mode, but after a long time, I managed playing without cheats as a protoss. Having the strategies needed, which were all copied from my cousins, made Starcraft more enjoyable.
I don't really know what made the game great. There's just something different about it, a different taste. However, like most strategic games, you are to build an army and make them strong with the use of strategy in order to have a successful attack and eliminate your opponent's camps and forces. In the game, you are to choose between three creatures: humans (terran), aliens who I consider clean (protoss), aliens who I consider as slimy and eewy (zerg). Each is different and special, but their strengths depend on the players.
Starcraft has expansions. I don't really remember what made the difference. I think it's just a continuation of the story which is featured in a campaign mode. The company responsible for it didn't make more expansions after that period. I thought it was the last of Starcraft although it remained popular. Indeed, it is popular. There is a Starcraft gaming event which professional players practice for a lot.
Fortunately, Starcraft has not yet reached its end. Starcraft II will soon be released with more focus on its multiplayer mode than the previous ones. Graphics were improved as exhibited by screenshots. The different creatures will make a comeback with new things. Starcraft II is a game worth waiting for.

The new Harry Potter theme park which is expected to open in late 2009 will be titled "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter". This new theme park will be within Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park at the Universal Orlando Resort. So they say its a “theme park within a theme park”. Even J.K. Rowling said "The plans I've seen look incredibly exciting, and I don't think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."
I hope that they will definitely be able to follow through with those plans. All the loyal fans of Harry Potter books and films will be surely wanting to visit all the wonderful places that the book describes. I would also want to go there one day if I could, that would be one of the top places for me to visit.

The Harry
Potter books and movies have indeed become a hit to the public and there's not much of a surprise if people will try to make more money from it. On late 2009, the Harry Potter Theme Park at Orlando, Florinda will have its debut. The park is under construction, and it will soon contain rides, restaurants, interactive attractions, and experimental shops that guarantees you to feel the magic.
I could still remember a classmate happily portraying Harry Potter while riding a broom. I could still recall my classmates' what-if questions. All of which requiring me to think about what would happen if all of us are witches, warlocks or wizards, who are schooling at a magical institution. Of course, simultaneous with these imaginations is the usual reality check. There's no Hogwarts. We're not capable of flying or doing magic with a piece of stick called wand. There are no aurors or war established by Voldemort.
Even though this world we call reality may be as usual as ever, I still won't trade it for anything else. But it is also nice to get out of the usual and just experience having fun with a product of human imagination. It's great to know that a Harry Potter Theme Park will soon exist. I just wish that I could go there and just have fun, but that seems unlikely to happen.

Windows Vista is indeed still new, it was released to the public worldwide on January 30, 2007. There are so many new or improved features in Windows Vista. Features such as Windows Aero , Windows shell , Instant Search, Windows sidebar, Windows Explorer 7 and much more. Although it was releaed late beacuse Microsoft had to put priority on previous operating systems, I think it will soon be the operating system everyone's using.

Windows Vista, which is also known as Longhorn, is the latest operating system of Microsoft. Its development was completed on November 8, 2006 and released last January 30, 2007. It holds the longest time span of release between two Microsoft products. It has new and edited features such as an update graphical user interface (GUI), visual style, and Windows DVD maker.
I've never used Windows Vista before, but I've gone off exploring different operating systems, and among those that I've used, I consider Windows XP the best. With a Windows environment, it's easier to do commands. Maybe the reason for this is that I'm accustomed to its environment. Plus its wide range of options and features made other operating systems look like trying hard copycats.
For six years now, Windows XP has been our operating system. To be honest, it's pirated or as you may call it the one without license. I could still remember two years ago, when there was a raid and computer centers were temporarily closed. I wonder how long it would take for Windows Vista to be spread for free.

The MPG-230A mobile multimedia player from Accupix Inc is a nice gadget for movie buffs. This gadget has a light weight display headset and a portable multimedia player. The multimedia player supports playback and recording of movies, images and sound of various file formats. These files are stored on an SD memory card. There is also a USB connectivity for file transfer. It would be great to have something like this because I really like to watch movies. But it's too expensive. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford something like this.

MP Glass 230M is a huge television made into glasses. It's not really new. I've seen it in the news years ago. Some people say that gadgets like this already existed in the 1990s. You might ask what makes it worthy of an entry in a blog that has a theme of presenting new stuff. Well, I still consider it as something new since I've never seen one before, and you might as well blame my amazement on how it takes years before gadgets become available here in Zamboanga. Plus, I still think that not everyone knows about it.
The MP Glass 230M is similar to the virtual reality device found at the computer game, Sims. If it's fashionable, I don't know. It makes you look like Cyclops from X-men. It also has built-in headphones. Oh well, a picture paints a thousand words so here it goes:

The sad part is, you need to connect it to a DVD player, VCR, or game console. Nothings perfect anyway. It's just that my dream MP Glass is one that allows users to use a memory card to store movies. However, if I'll be rating it, I'll still give it five stars because it allows users to think that they're watching things with a 30-inch screen just 2 meters away from them and the headphones are Stereo sound.
I wonder when it will be available here. Wait. Why the heck am I asking? It's availability won't really affect the way I'll watch movies since I can't afford to buy a gadget that's worth $523. Looks like I'm stuck with the ordinary TV.

The new movie Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix was really cool. I watched it last Saturday. The special effects were good. Though, I felt that the movie lack important details from the book. For example, Nymphadora Tonks had spikey hair in the book, in the movie she had straight hair. Also, the quiditch scenes were not shown in the movie. In the book, the elf Doby discovered the room of requirement. The movie, however, showed that Neville was the one who discovered it. I think the movie could have been better if it was longer.

I'm not your number one Harry Potter fan. I just like HP movies and books. That's all. Although not that big of a fan, I find the 5th movie, Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, worthy of recommendation and space in this blog.It has been six years since the first of the Harry Potter movies has been released. Even though it is the 5th of the saga, there's a new touch in it. A touch that's made by a new director, David Yates, together with a more mature Harry and Ron, a more daring Hermione, and new characters. Although there's a new man in charge, the special effects were still cool as ever. Also in one of the scenes is the awaited kiss shared by Harry and Cho.

Last week we saw the movie Transformers, and it was awesome!! The visuals and sounds were great, the parts i like best where when they transform or show off their shiny guns. The plot was great too, it revolves around a cube called the allspark . Megatron, the antagonist in the movie attempts to control it and turn the world into his robotic army. But Sam was able to destroy him by merging the allspark with Megatron, destroying them both.
In my opinion it was a great movie, though i was a little dizzy afterwards being in the front row with all the action. It was like I was in the movie. hehe

So far, J.K. Rowling has done a great job in aging Harry Potter. She managed to keep us readers wanting more. Her magic in writing truly engrosses us into a world of imagination. In book 7, Harry Potter and the deathly hollows, Harry will have his final face off with Voldemort. No one is sure if Harry will die or will he beat the villain like every typical hero does. In this book, Harry is supposed to find the remaining horcruxes to be able to kill Voldemort. However the story unfolds, I can't wait to be able to read the last book that will climax all the Harry Potter novels.

Obviously, I have not read the book and the only sure thing that I know is the title and the cover design. Everything else, is a mystery. It's sad that it's the last of the series. I was not really a Nokia person. I was a little annoyed by how the system works. Nokia keeps on releasing new products and the prices go down quickly. It's like, you enjoy your phone for a while but regret buying it whenever you realize how its price dropped and how great their new products are. Before, their camera quality was not high. Much (way way) lower, if you compare it with that of Samsung and Sony Ericson.
That was how I thought of it in the past. Now, I have a Nokia phone, practically enjoying it although not satisfied by it. This is due to the fact that Nokia phones are user-friendly and that they have improved a lot.
One of their products that I frequently see on TV is N95 with the tagline "it's what computers have become." N95 has a 5 megapixel camera which is way better than most digital cameras. Its appearance allows the user a better and comfortable way of listening to music. And if you're still not satisfied with this phone, you can avail phone accessories such as a wireless keyboard and a multimedia car kit. Indeed, it's what computers have become.
Two thumbs up!

I long believe that Sony products are synonymous to good quality. I like Sony mp3 players and their memory sticks. They have a lot of versions that have different sizes. I rarely use memory sticks, and if I use them, it would be for storing .doc and .ppt files only that don't really require a huge amount of space. So the increase in the sizes of their memory didn't amaze me. The changes were somehow expected. The only thing that fascinates me is the Blu-Ray for it can store up to 50GB.
I've heard about the Blu-Ray last summer. 50GB, that's striking. Well, with a bigger memory comes better quality and speed. It's not yet popular in the Philippines and I haven't seen one yet. Most people, like my father, are still quite contented with memories such as the one we have in this computer (average memory and speed).

Sony has the latest gadgets for recording media. They have the memory m2 that has 1GB memory and it is designed to work with phones, esp. Sonny Erricson. The memory m2 also comes with an adapter. Another is the memory stick ProDuo with 8GB capacity. It can be used with the cybershot camera, handycams, and PSP. Another thing is the microvault classic, it has 8GB memory, a USB connector, and it has a stylish piano shape body. The coolest of the recording media is the Blue Ray Disc. This allows high definition recording media, full HD 1080. It has 25 GB and 50 GB capacity and it comes in rewritable(RW) format. Its features are stable writing, scratch guard, temperature durability, and archive reliability to keep data for years.

The tunnel consists of 3 interconnected tubes: 1 rail track each way plus 1 service tunnel. Its length is 31 miles, of which 23 miles are underwater. Its average depth is 150 feet under the seabed. The channel crossing time for Eurostar is only 20 minutes. 95 miles of tunnels were dug by nearly 13,000 engineers, technicians and workers. The volume of rubble removed from the tunnel is three times greater than that of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. And it has increased the size of Britain by 90 acres. Equivalent to 68 football fields, this area has been made into a park.

One of the things I like is the construction of big and massive structures, and one of them is the channel tunnel. I have been a fan of shows like Kings of Construction, Building the Biggest and Power Zone. They show how these incredible structures are made and how tough it is to construct them.
The channel tunnel is 50km long, 38km of it is underwater it connects the United Kingdom and France. It is built beneath the English channel at the strait of dover. It's average depth is 150 ft the deepest is 197 ft. It took 13,000 thousand workers and seven years to complete it. It was operational in May of 1994. As of 2005, it transported 8.2 million passengers, 2 millions cars, 1.3 million trucks and 80,000 coaches.
For me this is one of the structures that is awe inspiring.

I'm a great fan of National Geographic (this may explain the frustrated forensic scientist who works at Nat Geo in me), but not of Megastructures. It is said that one of the episodes featured an underground tunnel that connects London to other places.
The Channel Tunnel or "Chunnel" connects the United Kingdom to France. It's not really new, but it's certainly amazing for one to be built under the sea with an average depth of 45.7m under the seabed. It was declared by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Source of Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_tunnel
Now, people can travel by train in sea (I don't even know if I could call in that way). Humans have indeed break the barriers and are using their intelligence for a faster, easier and comfortable life.

The Coral Island on The World is truly remarkable. It is definitely a way to escape the usual hustle of the city life. There are no roads in the Island and all the buildings there are low rise to keep the island's exclusive nature. The main attraction is the Centre Marina Village, a place where residents and visitors can enjoy fine dining, premium retail, luxurious leisure facilities offered by a high-end 150-room hotel and spa and, of course, a world-class marina.
If I were a rich girl, nananananana.. I would get myself a piece of real estate on that island...

When I first read about this I was astonished that something increadible is being created. It consists of around 300 man-made islands, each is around 5.7-21 acres. It is built off the coast of Dubai, and can only be reached by plane or boat. It is made primaly made of sand dredged from the see. The project started at 2005 and now it is already 90% complete. A lot of people including celebrities have already bought or are intending to buy an island. It is owned and constructed by Nakheel Properties.

Image Ref: http://www.theworld.ae/I've first heard about "The World" on a Vh1 show which featured estates of Hollywood celebrities. We may all know that owning islands among celebrities is becoming a trend already. What's new is that Nakheel has announced that it is developing its first island, Coral Island, found at the north coast of Canada. In three years, the first among the 300 islands that Nakheel is planning to develop near Dubai will be fully constructed.
Coral Island is a luxury resort which covers an area of 73 hectares (7.86m sqft). It will soon have a marina village, a specialist spa hotel, and a residential development. The island promises a great view for sunsets. Once fully developed, Coral Island will surely be a dream vacation destination.
As great as it is to know that the earth will soon recognize a new paradise, I still can't get it out of my mind what Mother Nature has sacrificed for such an ambitious dream. Where did the fishes and corals go? Is man not satisfied of destroying land, that he still conquered the sea? These are just questions raised by one who contributes well in polluting the earth.
I'm just caught in the middle.
