Hugs, as we all know and as dictionary.com describes it, is an affectionate embrace. Simple as it can be, I do not doubt its power of universal communication. All sorts of people from all over the globe need it. It is an action of love, acceptance, and comfort.

Hugs can be sent and received through the use of technology. No, I am not talking of YM emoticons. The passing of such an affection is done with a pair of shirt, their sensors, and something like remote controls.

Two people, who I think were couples, were featured in one of my favorite weekend National Geographic shows. They made an experiment how people hug and discovered that each hug in a very similar way. The couple planned to make shirts able to communicate hugs by placing sensors on the shirt where people put their hands on and apply pressure. One way for this hug device to work, the receiver and sender must wear shirts with sensors. The sender will hug himself and the shirt will record the amount of pressure. Using something that looks like a remote and a phone, he will send it, giving the receiver an option to take it. If the hug is accepted, the shirt of the receiver will generate an equal amount of pressure that was sent.

I don't think this device is already available commercially. Its success in the market in the future is still uncertain, but what's sure is that people who receive and give hugs, release more hormones and live long and happily.

Hug, while they're free and while distance is not yet a barrier.
